Logic/Mathematical Intelligence – What It Is

June 18, 2011

Also known as “number/reasoning smart”, this intelligence is strongly correlated with the traditional definition of IQ. Logical-mathematical learners quantify or conceptualize information in order to process it. These kids naturally excel in mathematics, chess, computer programming, reasoning capabilities, abstract patterns of recognition, scientific thinking and investigation, and the ability to perform complex calculations.

As a parent, you’ll notice that logic/math smart kids often think sequentially. They’ll remember the steps they need to take to use a computer program, or the order of turns that you make during a drive to a familiar place. Older kids that like to flex their logic/math “mind muscles” enjoy flowcharting, doing timelines, looking for patterns in numbers (e.g. my brother’s birthday is March 6, 2009. That’s 3-6-9…all multiples of 3!) and doing math puzzles like sudoku.
